PLOT
Werner Herzog’s 1972 film on a conquistador (Klaus Kinski) who takes over an Amazonian expedition has the feel of a movie by a Method filmmaker who becomes as possessed as the title character in his search for gold. “For me”, says Iñárritu, “it’s the creation of a myth. That’s what a great film is: myth and light. Herzog becomes Aguirre. It’s austerity is convincing – it doesn’t romanticize the motivations of the conquistador. It must be the only believable film about the Spanish craziness in pursuing the new world. The last image is just insane poetry”.
