For the famous show arranged by Luca Ronconi at the 1969 Festival of the Two Worlds in Spoleto, Edoardo Sanguineti adapted the ottava rima of Orlando furioso into dialogues and concentrated on certain narrative genres, in keeping with the director’s idea of giving the audience a choice between different scenes taking place simultaneously. Some years later, Rai decided to make a television version of it to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Ariosto’s birth, offering Ronconi one of the first great opportunities to experiment with the potential of audiovisual recording, editing, and the gaze of the camera. For the television version, he had to give up on the simultaneous scenes (the idea of broadcasting different episodes on two television channels of the time was rejected), and he focused on transforming the project, adding new elements to the text, condensing the protagonists’ stories into single narrative parables, and highlighting the visual element with intriguing camera movements that gave the recording equipment a leading role.
