Synopsis

Carol, a young Belgian manicurist, lives with her sister Hélène in a small apartment in London. Shy and awkward, Carol lives in a world of her own, insensitive to and distant from those around him. At home she is uncomfortable and disgusted by the constant presence of his sister’s lover. When the two go away on vacation, she is left alone and slowly slips down into a state of paranoia and has hallucinations. She becomes increasingly distracted and unreliable at work, while at home she is tormented by nightmares that fill up her long hours of solitude. Fired from her job, Carol retreats into her apartment, where she imagines he’s been raped. When Colin, the unrequited suitor, and Carol’s landlord come to visit, worried because they haven’t seen her, she murders them both. Her sister discovers the bodies along with Carol, now reduced to a catatonic state.
