28 Nov – 1 Dec 2005

Continuing its collaboration with Fondazione La Biennale di Venezia, Fondazione Prada presents at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini in Venice “The Secret History of Asian Cinema”, a selection of restored and rediscovered works curated by Marco Müller and featured during the 62nd Venice International Film Festival.

Thirteen restored Chinese films from the mid-1930s were presented, produced at the end of the silent film era and the golden age of film studios, and moving into revolutionary China in 1949. In the selection, the emphasis was placed on “unusual” filmmakers, those who had successfully implemented an unorthodox combination of Hollywood and Asian cinema. Japanese cinema explored the long development of popular cinema in the archipelago through thirty-eight films, revealing the evolution and incubation of various genres—largely unknown in the West—through the work of some of its main pioneers.
