Gören’s intense film was the winner of the 1982 Palme d’Or Cannes. In Yol, Gören depicts the anguish and ache caused by separation from family and home in five vignettes about a group of men given a weeklong leave from prison. Gören also forces the men ask themselves question about the traditions in which they were raised, which also placed them in a spiritual prison (Gören’s collaborator, Yilmaz Güney, was in prison when the film was made).
”This film is one of the reasons I am a director”. Iñárritu enthuses. “As a good piece of art, it affects us badly. I saw when I was 18; I took my father and he didn’t speak to me for two days afterwards! I saw it again three years ago, and not only was I still amazed, but I recognize all of my own films in it. It feels real, like a documentary for me”.
